3 biggest blogging myths (& why they are total BS!)

Considering blogging is such a new industry, boy have we managed to rack up some crazy old-wives-tales in our short life-span.

And as with all urban legends, folk lore, or even fairy tales, there was originally some basis in fact. But those facts happened a long, long time ago (a blog year is about 25 years because of how fast everything changes on the Interwebs).blogging myths

Up there with broken mirrors, the Loch Ness Monster, women shouldn't ask men out on dates, and don't walk under ladders (unless of course they look like they could fall on you... then that's just good sense), these blogging myths have now been proven completely false and outdated... yet people continue to believe in, and base their blogging on, their merit.

So I am here with my geekiest of glasses on to do some good old fashion Blogger Myth Busting.

BLOGGER BS #1 – YOU HAVE TO HAVE 100'S OF 1000'S OF READERS TO BE A SUCCESS

Rubbish! I have started, grown and run two successful blogs, one that has up to 500,000 visitors a month, and one that has 10,000 visitors a month. Guess which one earns more? Not the 500K one. And I know lots of other bloggers with small traffic, and small email lists, who still make a full-time income (plus some!) from their blogs.

BLOGGER BS #2 – THE BEST WAY TO MAKE MONEY ON YOUR BLOG IS SPONSORED POSTS AND BANNER ADS

*Bullsh*t sneeze*
Working with brands can be great, but you need to spend a long time growing your blog first before you can make any money (and even when you do it's unreliable, and the actual work can really suck!). And who wants to wait that long? In truth there are lots of different ways of making money off your blog (many of which you can actually start right now, and will make you more money in the long run too!) Then working with brands can just be the icing on the cake!

BLOGGER BS #3 – IT TAKES YEARS AND YEARS TO BECOME A FULL-TIME BLOGGER!

This is the biggest lie of all! Yes, it does take time (and work, there's still no magic button here), but I myself have created two blogs that were earning me full-time plus income both in around 12-18 months. And I know many (many) bloggers who have done the same. If your blog is set up right, and you focus on the right stuff, there's no reason you can't do this too!

I find that the way I make $ off my blog is via sponsored posts… I don’t sell products, I just “sell myself” – ha! But I am NO sell out, that’s for sure! I ONLY work with brands I love!

After more than 6 months of researching, I have come to the following conclusion – those that have a website or blog that promotes “how to blog” seem to do rather well. Why? Because all bloggers out looking for ways to grow there own site. How To Blog – is a growing industry. Most of those that have a normal everyday blog about books, vacations, beauty, wellbeing etc are struggling. I talk to many bloggers who are finding it very difficult to grow there online presence. The problem? It takes money. It doesn’t matter how great your website is if no-one can find you. I have read The Purple Cow, Secrets of Online Entrepreneurs by Bernadette Schwerdt, even read Social Media Marketing for Dummies! What have I learned? You need money! Adwords campaigns, Boosted Facebook posts. You also need connections – people to help get you into the spotlight, people who can help launch your blog. Many of those who have successful websites, blogs, are either well known or have worked in media, or PR….thats how its done! 🙂

Another way to make it online is to be really specific with what you do and who you do it for and how you can make those people care about you! If you are just a general blog about random things, why should we care? We don’t know you and definitely don’t care about your lifestyle!

I think it’s important to show people the VALUE you add to their lives.Think of the blogs that you read, they do something for you. Solve a problem or stop a pain. What’s in it for your readers. Why should they read your blog over someone else’s? It’s not about you! It’ about your readers and how you benefit them.

Firstly I’d like to know how to get started.
Secondly what is it that you do in blogging.
What is the cost of blogging.
Is this website hopefully not a scam.
Do you start with nothing and find your way around on who wants to be blogged.
I’m interested cos if like to work from home. Can you let me know further please. What is this bloggers MBA. Thanks
